Food in the Hood
Food in the Hood
In the midst of changing economics and financially challenging times, the basic staples of life such as food and drink become even more critical in order for families to survive. Although we cannot do everything, we can do something. With this in mind, in partnership with Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities, the Food in the Hood program has been designed to meet needs in a personal manner and without the unnecessary red tape. Our goal is for each registered family to receive quality grocery items, a delicious hot meal, health and nutrition support and a personal touch of kindness from a volunteer neighbor.
How does this program work?

Serving food is fun!
It’s really easy. Community members may visit our food pantry during our open hours. Upon arrival they will be asked to complete a simple registration form with proof of dependent information. Once this is completed they will be provided with a grocery bag of preselected food items. For each subsequent distribution clients will be asked to register in advance in order to be given access to our Client-Choice food pantry with the assistance of one of our friendly and helpful volunteer staff. If a guest client is unable to register in advance they will be provided with a grocery bag of preselected items.
Where is Food in the Hood located?
We are located at Cedarcrest Church 1630 E. 90th St. Bloomington, MN 55425.
When is Food in the Hood open?
The 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5-7:30 pm (no appointment necessary for preselected items)
Can I become involved as a volunteer partner and if so, how?
Yes, we are always looking for individuals and groups to become volunteer partners as we seek to bring an end to hunger in our community. Simply express your interest in becoming a partner by emailing our Brandon (Program Assistant) at brandon@ugmtc.org or by calling our office at 651-789-7629. A short volunteer application will be sent for you to complete. Once you’ve submitted the completed application for review and approval the next step is an invitation for you to join us for a simple orientation and then you’re set to go. Please note, a background check may be required for certain volunteer positions.
Do I need any special skills to volunteer?

A caring volunteer helping us to eliminate hunger
No, just a positive can-do attitude is all you need. Volunteers can help in a number of ways including food prep, set up, administrative help, hauling supplies, greeting guests, preparing meals, servers, inventory helpers, cleaners, children’s programming, etc. In short, if you have a willing heart we have a place for you. Serving together always provides a great time for connecting with others and a wonderful way to give back to the community in a meaningful manner.
